Reader request: Cold weather alternatives

I received my very first reader question the other day (eee!!) and am so excited to answer it!

With this cool weather, I'm looking for a good, warm, but comfortable shoe that I could wear with ankle pants, preferably in black or brown. I know women will wear them with ballet flats even when it's cold, but I can't haha. Any advice? I'm not big on heels, but if it is comfortable and not too high, I would do it. I would love a lace up boot! Thanks! :)

When you actually stop and think about this, it's kind of a tricky question, especially if you're trying to find a shoe with little or no heel. But if you work in a city and commute in anything other than a car, flats are essential. (All shoes are from ASOS.)

Option 1: Oxfords
Menswear-inspired looks are beyond huge right now and, technically, aren't a traditional flat. They provide a bit more coverage and look great when paired with socks (think J.Crew catalog) and cropped trousers for a look that's easily work friendly.

Option 2: Ankle booties
For the sake redundancy, I won't go into my love for wedge booties again (which really are amazing, especially if you're not big on heels) and instead turn my focus to flat ankle boots. In lookbooks across the Web, we're seeing tons of cropped trousers paired with ankle boots and I think the combo is to die for!

Option 3: Lace-up booties
I'm soooo glad Erica mentioned loving lace-up booties because I definitely have a thing for them as well! I love that they can add an instant edge to an otherwise girly look.

I'm also looking for a name for this feature. The obvious "Ask Alison" came to mind, but every time I play it over in my head I get the urge to write, "Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat's me!!!" If this makes absolutely no sense and you haven't a clue what I'm referring to, click here. See also, Nickelodeon and growing up in the 90's.
